July Club Meeting!

Don’t forget that tonight is the July meeting. Your webmaster is slipping as I just realized this yesterday! Ouch. At any rate, join fellow members for Amateur fellowship and DX talk tonight at the regular club meeting spot.

May Club Meeting

The May program will be twofold: First, there will be a review of the club's election process and a call for nominations. Second, K2RSK will present a video of the October 2009 K4M DX-Pedition to Midway Island.

March Meeting

1357
The March WNYDXA meeting program will held Friday, March 12, 2010. The presenter is our esteemed 100 watt DX'er Peter, K2RSK.

Peter will present a DVD program on the exploits of the famous Kon-Tiki which was a raft that drifted from the shores of South America across the Pacific Ocean and smashing onto a reef in the Tuamotu Islands on August 7, 1947 as proof that the ocean currents could propel a raft across the Pacific.

You may ask what does this have to do with ham radio? It was ham radio that provided the communications while they were sailing across the Pacific. No transistor solar powered rigs in the raft! Wait till you see what they used for their transmitter and receiver.

The expedition was headed up by Thor Heyerdahl who wrote a book on the expedition along with four others.

See this months QST, March, page 73 for a brief synopsis and indicating that the last survivor of the raft exploit has died.

February Meeting Update

Another super meeting is in the bag and if you did not get a handout of the presentation by Bob, WB2YQH, simply click on the Files page and download a copy. Enjoy.

February Meeting

iotargb
Plan on coming to the February meeting on the 12th. A presentation on the "Islands on the Air" (IOTA) award program will be given by Bob, WB2YQH. Hear about the fastest growing segment of amateur radio today. If you thought DX was fun before, learn all about this side of what makes the bands hum with signals. You will be surprised at how easy this activity is. You don't want to miss this program! And if you simply cannot wait to work your very first IOTA, look for the the club’s very own, K2ZR/4 who is now active on IOTA NA-062. He’ll be there for a few months.

January Meeting Announcement

The first meeting of 2010 will be this Friday, January 8th, at Denny's by the airport. Jim Hain, W2IMY, will present a program on Satellite Operations. Meeting time and location are on the Meetings Page. See you there!

December Meeting Announcement

HolidayCard-lg
The December Meeting will be the Annual WNYDXA gift exchange. This has been formerly known as the Chinese Gift Exchange. Your webmaster does not to do PC, so Chinese Gift Exchange it is. Besides, the Chinese would be proud that we’ve adopted another fun activity from their culture.

The rules are very simple, but until you try it you’ll never appreciate how much fun this can be!

Typically, one spends about $20 and wraps a gift for the exchange. It does not have to be obviously radio-related. There will be numerous bottles of adult libation if history repeats. You might find small kits, parts, tools, or even a giant chocolate bar. You never know what your fellow member wrapped up in that box. Come on out and join us at the
Christmas Holiday meeting on December 11.

November Meeting

www.nationalgridus.com
The
November Meeting program on 11/13/09 (a.k.a. Friday the 13th) will be a presentation by Bob Brown of National Grid on Electrical Safety for Amateur Operators. He will discuss some of the recently publicized accidents and help us learn how to avoid problems. Be there and be safe!

October Meeting Announcement

Don't forget the October meeting on Friday 9/9/09. We will be reviewing some key points about the NYQP contest and watching a presentation on receiver performance measurements prepared by Rob Sherwood. (He won't actually be here.) George, W2YJ, will show a power point presentation that Rob sent him and will discuss the key points.
