WRTC 2014 Comes to USA

The Big Kahuna of contesting is coming to the USA in 2014. Lots of hams are rabid IARU contesters and and every four years the WRTC adds another dimension to the event by fielding a huge number of the worlds best operating in two man teams with judges from nearly identical stations in the same geographical location. Maybe the contest date of mid-July every year is magical because it is so far from the normal HF contest season. At any rate, here is the promo video.

The Open Championship?

Golf has its Grand Daddy of all competition, the Open Championship. But what about CW contesting? Some might say that it is the ARRL DX, others will argue that the CQWW CW is the ultimate competition. The CWops Club have now throw down the gauntlet by sponsoring the brand new CWops CW Open Competition on August 20 and 21, 20111. The basic idea is to have three 4-hour sessions over a single weekend. Each session favors a different portion of the globe so everyone can get in on the action. You may operate one or all sessions. Just like its golf cousin, anyone can come and play. No invitation needed like those stuffy club events. Check it out!

Your webmaster, K2QO, is CWops Member #573 and I know that there are numerous other CWops in WNYDXA.

CQ WW Preparations

Now these guys know how to get ready for a contest! Here is how Lee, WW2DX portrayed the event:

Pat N2IEN and I decided it would be a cool idea to play a practical joke on Ray W2RE by buzzing his towers at his Catskill contest QTH and then land a helicopter in his front lawn! I took the video that I shot that day (thanks WU2X for HD camera) and made a funny Movie trailer using iMovie 11.

Stew Perry Top Band Distance Challenge

If you’ve read the posts of the clubs 160M mavens, you know that conditions on that band have been excellent. Many club members are racking up new countries as if Santa was handing out rare QSL card every time he laughed, HO, HO, HO! Beginning this afternoon is your shot at running up your 160M totals in the Stew Perry Topband Challenge. This is 160M, CW only contest where the exchange is simply the your grid square. Nice. Your webmaster is a HUGE fan of this exchange because it is what is used for VHF contesting. The scoring is unique as it is based on distance. The festivities begin at 10 AM local time and run for 24 hrs. Check it out here.

ARRL 10M Contest This Weekend

The ARRL 10M Contest runs this weekend. If you need some juicy DX to fill in some blanks on 10M, this may be a good opportunity. Traditional thinking may lead one to the conclusion that this will be a waste of time, but the in-the-know crowd knows otherwise! As far as propagation, E-skip combined with meteor scatter should provide some good fun. So jump in! Here are links to ARRL for the contest rules and this weeks propagation report.

ARRL June VHF QSO Results Posted - K2QO/R Team Wins Atlantic Division!

The results of the June VHF QSO Party (link) were posted earlier today and club members K2QO and W2TAU have again cracked the top 10 in Rover competition with a 10th place finish (1st place Atlantic Division) against some seriously stiff competition! If you've been paying attention lately you'll have noticed that many club members have been lighting up the scoreboards in a slew of contests.

Attaining the top levels of radiosport competition for so many members is a testement to the skills and knowledge within WNYDXA.

Another local rover, Steve, KC2QZF, had a nice 9th place finish in the Limitied Rover Category which was good for 1st Place Atlantic.
